Every Day Carry items are the little pieces of gear that make day to day life just a little bit easier and these are the Top 5 must haves!

Pocket Knife

A good pocket knife can perform a multitude of tasks during the day, from opening the mail to gardening tasks a sharp knife is a must have. In fact if you can only have one piece of EDC on you, the pocket knife is it. A  good modern pocket knife is sharp, light, and durable. Multi-tool

Multitools have picked up where the venerable Swiss Army knives of the past have left off. Now a good Swiss Army Knife is a joy to use it loses out to the newer Multitools. The main reason for the Multi-tool over the S.A.K. is the addition of the pliers. They come in handy on a daily basis and are a must in an emergency situation. The Leatherman Juice S2 is the leader in lightweight pocket multi-tools, slip it in to your pocket and you’ll forget about it until you need it! For a few dollars less but a few ounces more the Leatherman Wingman makes a great alternative.

Flashlight

The ability to see and work in the dark can not be underestimated. The latest LED lights are easy to carry and have insanely long battery lives. The Streamlight Stylus Pro is quite possibly the perfect example of the pocket light. Running on regular AA batteries is just icing on the cake.

A Lighter

Being able to start a fire can be a matter of life or death in a survival situation, and that is why a lighter makes the list of the top 5 EDC must haves. Custom  Zippos are cool and if that is your thing by all means indulge yourself but a cheapo Bic makes a fire too! It might not have the Cool Guy Factor to it but if you’re freezing it will save your ass just as well as the more expensive one.

Duct Tape

The uses for Duct Tape can be a book in it’s own right. You’ll be hard pressed to find one item that can close wounds, provide cordage, hold stuff together, and seal a leaky tent in the middle of the night. A couple of feet wrapped around an old bank card in your wallet or around your lighter can pay big dividends if The Poop Hits The Fan.

There you have it The Top 5 Must Haves for EDC. A knife, a multi-tool, a flashlight, a lighter, and some duct tape can form the basis of a more comprehensive kit or be all you carry to face the day.

  2. Great Piece Mike! My EDC’s vary from week to week but revolve around these same top items. I like knives that can be opened and closed with one hand. Liner lock knives from Kershaw or CRKT allow you to manipulate them with one hand. Assisted opening knives open with a slight flick and close easily. A lot of folks here in the south carry little peanut knives and use them for everything.
    What do folks in NYC do? Can they carry multi tools that have a knife blade? I hear horror stories.

It’s helped me in my day-to-day life with simple chores where in the past I had to go find scissors or take a box into the kitchen. Finding the right knife is a very personal selection process, but there are a few things to keep in mind, strength, steel-type, blade-shape and warranty. With a folder, it’s important to pay attention to the locking mechanism and any pivot-points for potential weakness – the last thing you want to do is have a locked blade fold in on you!
