With all the crazy news in the world these days I think the ongoing crisis in Cyprus deserves a special look from a Prepper’s Point of View.
From The New York Times:
NICOSIA, Cyprus — Cyprus’s parliament on Friday partly approved a revised formula for obtaining an international bailout to avert a default, amid strong signals that the plan would not pass muster with international lenders.
But they put off voting on a crucial new proposal until later this weekend — one that would confiscate a stunning 22 percent to 25 percent of uninsured deposits over 100,000 euros through a new tax to be placed on account holders in one of the nation’s most troubled banks.
Reading these increasingly worrisome stories in the Mainstream Media gets me wondering about what something similar would like here in the US and how best to be prepared for it. As I try to wrap my head around it I keep coming back to the same basics that have served me so well in the wild weather we’ve had on the East coast the past 2 years. Having your basic preps in a row food, water, shelter, energy (heat, electricity, and fuel for cooking), and security can only help you and your family get through a crisis like the people of Cyprus are enduring right now.
What would you do if the atm’s ran dry and credit cards were suddenly not working?
What would be your biggest concern?

Sounds eerily similar to what we experienced in the days immediately after Sandy. ATMs and credit card machines down (due to no power). Gotta be prepared with a cash reserve and a reliable ‘stash’ of food/water/provisions in the house. A more long term situation like Cyprus would require more of a community approach in that you’d need to rely on a group of people to get buy (a neighborhood for instance).
