Here we are 4 months Post-SuperStorm Sandy and Fire Island, NY still looks like a war zone. Here are a few pictures I took while working over there today.
That is the Atlantic out there in the distance and there used to be dunes! It is weird to be able to see the Bay and the Ocean at the same time. It sort of feels like a good wave and you could be under water at any moment.
Ocean Beach, NY should have “No Wake” signs and not Speed Limit signs!
The Bay was overflowing into Ocean Beach. It was weird to see actual currents flowing in the water. I was half Lineman, half Boat Captain today!
Just a random pile of debris that used to be a house!
I saw a lot of this today. Houses that were gutted in the hopes that they would dry out and at least the shell would be salvageable.
“Dude, Where is my bike?”
This shows just how much sand came pouring into the residential areas of Fire Island.
When I was leaving the Island an feeling a little bit bummed out by how destroyed the place was I found a little bit of solace in the Fire Island Lighthouse. I figure it must have seen some bad-ass storms in it’s 155 years and it just seemed to say “this too shall pass”. . .
