Leatherman: Pocket Survival
Leatherman is the original and the best. Though there are many pretenders to the throne, Leatherman rules the pocket cutlery kingdom with divine right, but a right that has been earned through products that continue to impress. Sturdy, attractive and infinitely useful, long may Leatherman reign. Here I decided to give you a little info on how Leatherman came to be the king of multi-tools, and to indulge and justify my crush at the same time.
The History
The Pocket Survival Tool was invented due to a need for something better than a Boy Scout pocket knife. Mr Leatherman and his wife travelled around Europe and the Middle East in the seventies and found that they continuously had to repair their faulty car and leaky plumbing; he was inspired to create the Pocket Survival Tool. In 1983, Leatherman and co-founder Steve Berliner founded the Leatherman Company. In 1984, almost 30,000 tools were sold. The business continued to grow and the Leatherman brand has become a household name for those interested in knives and survival and preparedness. Today, you can buy them at all good hardware, outdoor and military surplus type stores, like RV Ops bushcraft tools.
The Tools
The Pocket Survival Tool was the first in 1983, and in 1986 the Mini Tool was invented. The Mini Tool is the smallest multipurpose tool with full-size, full strength pliers. This tool was retired along with the pocket survival tool in 2004. Today Leatherman produce many useful tools that mean that they are a practical tool for many, a necessity for others, and some even owe their lives to a Leatherman, just look to their website for their Tool Tales of life and death hanging in the balance. They have a wide range of tools at different price points, so whatever your need and however big your pocket, you’ll be able to fit a Leatherman in there!
The Warranty
25 years. Need I say more? It conveys the confidence that Leatherman as a company has in its products, and means that should you have a problem, it will be fixed free of charge.
The Community Spirit
Leatherman likes to give back to the community too, and their products often include a donation to one of the many charities that they support. These charities reflect the values that Leatherman tries to embody, such as the International Hunter Education Association for responsible hunting, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Wounded Warrior Project and many more. They also support employees if they want to volunteer at various projects including Habitat for Humanity.
