If you are looking to get a gift for the prepper in your life (or just want to score some sweet gear for yourself) here is a few Prepper Gift Ideas up to $50. I’ll post my ideas for those with deeper pockets soon.
Under $25 –
Gerber Shard Keychain Tool– This is a neat little piece of gear. It rides comfortably on your keys and I’m surprised how much I use it.
Energizer Rechargeable LED Flashlight – These are worthwhile additions to any “prepared” household. They came in handy during both Hurricane Irene and Hurricane Sandy! They’ve earned their place in my home.
Build the Perfect Bug Out Bag: Your 72-Hour Disaster Survival Kit– This is a very comprehensive book on building a Bug Out Bag (BOB). A prepper love this on Christmas morning!
$25-50
Streamlight Septor LED Headlamp– I’ve always liked headlamps, but this one was raised into the indispensable tool category for me, in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. I highly recommend giving one a shot!
Ambient Weather WR-111A Emergency Radio– This is another star of Hurricane Sandy. I really liked to use this little gem when the generator was off as it could play my Ipod with the supplied cables.
This is all stuff I’ve used at work, in the field, or during the Hurricanes that hit Long Island in 2011 and 2012 (Irene and Sandy). I stand by this gear and recommend it without reservation.

That radio is awesome. It’s also currently sold out on Amazon — I know because (ironically) I linked to it in a post this morning. I jut don’t know how any of the others are so I figured people can always back order it, you know? It’s really the best one I’ve tried.

It really is a great little radio!

Thanks for the list, funny thing is I just asked my MIL to get us some of the energizer flashlights. We have power outages at the drop of a hat, so these would be perfect.
Mike says
They really do come in handy. When we lost power during Irene they popped right on and I was able to see well enough to navigate the house and go throw the main off. During Sandy we lost power during the day and they let us know we were out and needed to get the genny going.

Hey Mike good to know. We lost power with Sandy for 5 days. We had everything set so we got the genny going within 5 minutes. We have sump pumps we need to keep going because we flood. Last year after Irene (again, power out) We learned several lessons which have made us become more self reliant so we were pretty prepared for Sandy. One thing we talked about, but haven’t done was set up the genny to power the house, we’re on a well so no water without power. That is tops on our list to get done.

When I was a kid my Mom’s house had a well and I remember running around filling everything with water before a storm came in.

Mike,
You mentioned a Well in that last post. I live in a very rural area and also have a Well with very good water. Growing up on a Tobacco farm we had a few of Wells around. Two of them only had the manual hand pumps that needed a little priming to get them started. Once you were pumping, the water was very cold and no electricity needed. My current Well has an electric water pump. But, I also have a manual hand (cast iron) pump on stand by!! Just a thought and I’m surprised that more people don’t have them!!
