Well with the 4 day orgy of Consumerism being over I feel comfortable enough to poke my head out from under the blankets and write this blog. Now, I don’t want people to think that I’m anti-Capitalist I enjoy the fruits of our modern economy as much as the next guy but… I don’t see the point in rushing out into the throng of rampant shoppers as soon as the turkey has gone cold on the table on Thanksgiving. What could be more of a slap in the face to the one Holiday we’ve got that didn’t have any gift giving obligations to it, than by turning into the jump off point for the mother of all Consumerism? The day after Thanksgiving and the weekend following it have devolved into a semi-riot (and unfortunately in some cases full blown riot) of consumption. Like locusts we pick over the turkey and then go out and pick over the stores. Why not stay in on Black Friday; enjoy sleeping in, make a family breakfast, gorge on Left-overs for lunch, and watch a movie with the kids? Seems like a nicer thing to do than get pepper sprayed at the mall , get into fist fights, or trample someone to death but, maybe I’m a dreamer.

Amen to that! I for one find frying up leftover mashed potatoes the day after very yummy!

I love fried mashed potatoes! My Mom used to make them. They are something we lost with microwaves 🙁

You may say you’re a dreamer, but you’re not the only one. It seems that while so many search for the true meaning of Christmas every year (and apparently many find it in a 128$ laptop) the meaning of Thanksgiving is being washed away faster than a walmart shopper cleaning off pepper mace. We are supposed to be grateful for the sharing and kindness a native culture provided us at a time we were a fledgling country. So I suppose nothing says that better than throwing someone aside to grab the last Xbox. I agree with you sir. We need to preserve this and all the holidays as a time of reflection and thanks for what we do have and save the shopping for another day

I stayed home and made some bread with acorns. They’ve made Black Friday into some kind of an event which I’ve always stayed away from.

Bread with acorns sounds interesting as all get out!

Amen, brother.
